You Can’t Always See Them, But They’re Still Important!

They may not be that conspicuous but socks are important pieces of clothing.  They sheath countless feet and provide comfort, protection, and style when needed.  Majority of athletes for example, wear socks with their sports shoes for optimum performance and to keep blisters at bay.  School children need socks too as part of their daily uniform.

Buying a pair of socks is fairly simple if you know exactly what sort you want.  But if you have no idea what to look for, you may be overwhelmed with the dozens of choices out there.  Men’s socks alone have four major types – dress, sport, casual and work.  In contrast, women’s socks have casual, sport, and trouser varieties.  Trouser socks are similar to opaque panty hose or tights and get runs too, just like nylon stockings.  Nylon, cotton, wool, acrylic, polyester, and spandex are the fibers commonly used in socks. Sock lengths vary.  The shorter ones are the quarter top, anklet, crew and calf-length socks, while the longer types are the knee and thigh high socks.

In a quest to clean up the planet and save the world from the devastating effects of global warming, more and more people are turning green.  Practices and products are changing and are becoming less wasteful and more eco-friendly.  Garbage segregation for example, is now being implemented in numerous sites around the globe, and campaigns for recycling and tree planting continue to intensify.

Organic is in, as evidenced by the proliferation and support of all things natural.  It’s cool to grow vegetables in your backyard, as it is to have “green” homes that utilize natural lighting.  Clothing manufacturers have joined the green movement as well.  This is the reason why smart and affordable garments made of environmentally sustainable materials now exist.  You’ll easily find several of these functional pieces online.  Choose from organic socks, tights, shirts, loungewear, scarves, leg warmers, and baby clothes.

Fabric Dyes

Recently, a customer asked me about the dyes used on our organic cotton clothing.  I thought it would be worth some discussion in my blog.  The dyes are low impact (on the environment) fiber reactive dyes as opposed to conventional dying practices that can release chlorine, chromium and other pollutants into the environment.

I found a great description of fiber reactive dyes on www.wisegeek.com :

“Fiber reactive dyes are textile dyes which form a covalent bond with the fibers of the textile, resulting in a long lasting, bright dye. They can be challenging to work with and more expensive than conventional fabric dyes… In addition to the dye itself, salt and soda ash are necessary to set the dye.”

I hope this is as enlightening to you as it was to me.
